How to Stand Out at Home Shows with Illuminated Feature Walls: A NZ Guide to Lighting and SEG Displays

How to Stand Out at Home Shows with Illuminated Feature Walls: A NZ Guide to Lighting and SEG Displays

The short answer

The fastest way to stand out at a home show is light. In a hall of hundreds of stands under flat overhead lighting, an illuminated SEG wall glows from within, pulls eyes from across the aisle, and makes your product photography look like it belongs in a magazine.

Quick summary

  • What it is: An illuminated feature wall is a backlit fabric display. A printed fabric graphic with a silicone edge (SEG) presses into an aluminium or PVC lightbox frame fitted with LEDs.
  • Why it works: Expo halls are evenly lit and visually noisy. A self-lit wall is brighter than everything around it, so it reads as the focal point from the far end of an aisle.
  • Who it suits: Builders, kitchen and bathroom designers, flooring, window and door companies, solar, spa and pool, furniture and outdoor-living brands, anyone selling a look.
  • Typical setup: A 3 m × 2.5 m illuminated back wall, a lightbox counter, and one or two smaller lightboxes for product feature zones.
  • Cost guide: Brand Display's illuminated SEG walls start from $320 (fabric only) and range to around $7,749 for a complete 6 m wall, including GST.

This guide covers how to design, light and lay out an illuminated feature wall for the Auckland Home Show, Canterbury Home Show and other large New Zealand exhibitions.

Why lighting wins at home shows and large exhibitions

Home shows are crowded, and visitors decide in seconds which stands to walk into. The Auckland Home Show alone brings together around 450 exhibitors across multiple halls at the Auckland Showgrounds, with many selling similar products side by side.

Illumination gives you an unfair advantage in that environment:

  • It wins the eye first. People are naturally drawn to the brightest point in a space. A backlit wall is brighter than the printed banners and pull-ups around it.
  • It makes products look premium. Home-show visitors are buying a finished look: a kitchen, a bathroom, a deck. Backlit imagery shows colour, texture and finish the way a showroom does.
  • It cuts through hall lighting. Expo halls often have high, cool overhead lighting that flattens printed graphics. Light coming through the fabric avoids glare and keeps colours rich.
  • It reads in photos and video. Visitors and influencers film stands. A glowing wall photographs well on a phone, so your brand travels further than the show floor.
  • It signals an established business. A seamless, frameless lit wall says "serious company" in a way a vinyl banner can't, which matters when you're asking for a $40,000 renovation.

The same logic applies at Fieldays indoor pavilions, wedding expos, franchise expos, boat shows and industry conferences.

What is an illuminated SEG wall?

An illuminated SEG wall is a freestanding lightbox made of a modular frame, built-in LED lighting, and a printed fabric graphic with a silicone strip sewn around its edge. The silicone edge pushes into a channel in the frame, pulling the fabric drum-tight so there are no visible joins, wrinkles or fixings.

Key facts about Brand Display's illuminated SEG systems:

  • Frame depth: 120 mm (premium, brightest, freestanding walls) or 85 mm (lighter, folding).
  • Frame material: Brushed aluminium (lightest, most durable) or gloss white PVC (lower upfront cost).
  • Lighting: OSRAM LEDs at 6500K white, rated to 50,000 hours on 120 mm models and 25,000 hours on 85 mm models.
  • Fabric: Dye-sublimation printed, water-based inks, 100% recyclable non-stretch polyester, DIN 4102-1 B1 fire rated.
  • Setup: Tool-less, click-together frames. The fabric presses in by hand.
  • Transport: Packs into a padded wheeled carry bag. A 3 m × 2 m aluminium wall travels in a bag around 1 m long.
  • Reusable: Swap the fabric for a new campaign and keep the frame for years.

New to SEG? Our earlier article, Why Illuminated SEG Walls Are the Ultimate Display Solution for Expos, Events & Corporate Spaces, covers the basics in more depth. This guide focuses on how to design and light a feature wall that wins at a busy home show.

8 design tips for an illuminated feature wall that stands out

  1. Lead with one hero image, not a collage. One beautiful, full-bleed photo of your best project (a finished kitchen, a sunlit deck) reads from across the hall. Ten small photos read as clutter.
  2. Put your logo and one message at eye level and above. Keep the logo in the top third so it shows over visitors' heads. Use one short line, such as "Kitchens designed and built in Waikato", not a list of services.
  3. Design for light, not paper. Backlighting boosts brightness and saturation. Rich colours and deep shadows look stunning. Large areas of pure white can glare, so use off-white or a light tint instead.
  4. Use high-resolution imagery. Aim for at least 100 dpi at full printed size. A 3 m wide wall needs a very large original photo. Phone photos usually pixelate when backlit.
  5. Keep text minimal and big. If someone can't read it from 5 m away, cut it. Put detail on brochures, screens and your website.
  6. Avoid critical content near the edges and joins. Leave a safe zone around the silicone edge so nothing important wraps into the frame channel. Use our Template Centre for exact bleed and safe areas.
  7. Match the light to the mood. 6500K LEDs give a crisp, modern white. If your brand is warm (timber, natural stone, outdoor living), bake a slight warm tone into the artwork so the lit result feels inviting.
  8. Plan a double-sided wall if you have an island stand. Complete Brand Display wall kits include two printed graphics, one per side, so a wall in the middle of your stand works from both aisles.

Choosing the right illuminated SEG system

For most home-show stands, a 120 mm aluminium wall is the best all-rounder: brightest, sturdiest and longest-lasting LEDs. Choose 85 mm or folding frames if you exhibit often and set up yourself.

Aluminium or PVC? Aluminium is lighter, more rigid and better for frequent travel. Gloss white PVC costs less upfront and suits brands that want a bright white edge. Browse both: Aluminium SEG Products · PVC (Gloss White) SEG.

Need a non-lit option for side walls? The 40mm Aluminium Folding SEG Wall keeps the same seamless fabric look at a lower cost.

Illuminated stand layouts by size

SEG frames connect into straight runs, L-shapes, U-shapes, towers and rooms, so one kit can grow with your stand. Here are proven starting points.

Suggested setup

Why it works

3 m × 2 m shell scheme

One 3000 × 2500 mm illuminated back wall + lit counter

Covers the whole back of the stand in light; counter brings people forward

3 m × 3 m

3 m back wall + one 1 m lightbox tower on the open side

Back wall for the brand, tower for a hero product or offer

6 m × 3 m

6 m back wall, or 3 m back wall + two 2 m side walls (U-shape)

Creates a glowing "room" visitors step into, ideal for kitchen, bathroom and interiors brands

Corner site

L-shape: 3 m back wall + 2 m or 3 m side wall

Lit on two aisles, so it catches traffic from both directions

Island (open on four sides)

Double-sided central wall or tower cluster, lit counters facing out

Brand visible from every angle; works as a divider between display zones

Tip: Leave at least 1 m of open floor in front of your wall. Visitors need room to step back and take it in, and to take photos.

Lighting the rest of your stand

The feature wall is the beacon, but the whole stand should feel considered. Layer your lighting so there's one hero and several supporting acts.

  • Lit counter up front. A SEG light box counter gives staff a home base and repeats your brand at hip height, where visitors' eyes land when the aisle is busy.
  • Lightbox towers for products. A slim 1 m lightbox behind a tap, a tile sample or a window profile turns a small product into a showpiece.
  • Spotlights on physical samples. Use warm spotlights on timber, stone and fabric so textures pop against the cooler glow of the wall.
  • Check power early. Each lit frame needs a power point. Order enough outlets from the show organizer and bring a tidy, safety-tagged power board.

Frequently asked questions

What does SEG stand for? SEG stands for silicone edge graphic (also called silicone edged graphics). It's a printed fabric with a thin silicone strip sewn around the edge that slots into a channel in a display frame.

Are illuminated SEG walls worth it for a home show? Yes, if you exhibit more than once. The frame and LEDs last for years, so later shows only need a new fabric print. A lit wall also outperforms printed banners for visibility in busy halls.

How much does an illuminated SEG wall cost in New Zealand? At Brand Display, a 3 m × 2 m 120 mm aluminum illuminated wall is $3,638 complete, or $909 for a replacement fabric (prices incl. GST, October 2026). Smaller lightboxes start from around $320.

How long does an illuminated SEG wall take to set up? Most walls go up in minutes with no tools. Frames click together, the fabric presses into the edge channel, and you plug in the LEDs.

How long do the LED lights last? Brand Display uses OSRAM LEDs rated to 50,000 hours on 120 mm frames and 25,000 hours on 85 mm frames, with a one-year product warranty.

Can I reuse my SEG wall with new graphics? Yes. Pull out the old fabric and press in a new one. This makes SEG ideal for seasonal campaigns, new product launches or rebrands.

Is SEG fabric fire rated for exhibitions? Brand Display SEG fabric carries a DIN 4102-1 B1 fire rating. Always check your show organiser's exhibitor manual for their specific requirements.

Can I use the same wall in my showroom after the show? Yes. Many clients move their lit wall into their showroom, office reception or retail store between events. Custom wall-mounted lightboxes are also available for permanent spaces, as in our Zeiss Vision Centre case study.

Do you deliver nationwide? Yes. Brand Display is based in Rotorua and delivers across New Zealand, supporting events in Auckland, Tauranga, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown and beyond.
